Operating since 1955, the Fort Leavenworth Historical Society protects and shares the history and the heritage of the U.S. Army on the frontier and the Fort Leavenworth area.  We encourage education on the frontier army and Fort Leavenworth through outreach programs to local schools, bringing in well known presenters for monthly programs, and donating funds to the Frontier Army Museum to purchase additional artifacts for the collection. Army leaders since the 1880s have been coming through Fort Leavenworth, so our monthly programs also extend to nearly all conflicts that the United States has been involved, with the common tie-in being the education provided by the various schools that are today known as the Command and General Staff College.

The society manages the Arter-Darby Military History Writing Award, given to the student who submits the best paper during their military history course at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College each year.

Our society uses as its symbol a representation of a 3rd Infantry Regiment soldier from the early 19th century.  Elements of this regiment, under the command of Colonel Henry Leavenworth, founded Fort Leavenworth in 1827.

The oldest continuously active fort west of the Mississippi River, and the fifth oldest fort still serving the nation, Fort Leavenworth's contributions are not only in the past.  In the nearly two hundred years since its founding, Fort Leavenworth has become the intellectual hub of the Army, with the Command and General Staff College, doctrine writing, and digital exercises as just a few of its activities.  A new building to house the staff college, known as the Lewis and Clark Center, links the modern fort with its historical precedents when the US Army explored this location on their way west in 1804.

Scott Porter from the Ft Leavenworth Historical Society points out the inscription on the memorial at Camden Point.  The battlefield tour and cemetery visit were part of the historical society's March 2008 program.

Camden Point was a Civil War battle in July 1864, and is located just north of Platte City, Mo.
