Shortly after the Civil War, Congress authorized of two cavalry and four infantry regiments formed of African-American soldiers: the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 38th, 39th, 40th, and 41st Infantry Regiments. Later the four infantry regiments were merged into the 24th and 25th Infantry Regiments.
The nickname "Buffalo soldiers" began in 1867and was a mark of respect by the Cheyenne of the fighting capabilities of the 10th Cavalry Regiment, and spread to refer to all the African-American regiments.
The 10th Cavalry was raised at Fort Leavenworth on September 21, 1866.
