Medal of Honor recipients and Leavenworth County
Leavenworth County has the distinction of having the second greatest concentration of Medal of Honor recipients in the country after Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Two recipients of the Medal of Honor currently live in the city of Leavenworth-- Colonel (retired) Roger Donlon (Vietnam) and Charles Hagemeister, (Vietnam) making Leavenworth the only city that two recipients call home.
There are a total of 19 recipients buried in three cemeteries in Leavenworth County.
Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery: nine interred and one memorialized
Captain Harry Bell, (Philippine Insurrection) 36th Infantry, U.S. Volunteers
2LT Thomas Custer, (Civil War) Company B, 6th Michigan Cavalry. Custer received two MOHs, one of only 19 double recipients.
Lieutenant (j.g.) William Edward Hall, (World War II) Scouting Squadron 2, Air Group 2, USS Lexington
Corporal John Kyle, (Indian Wars) Company M, 5th US Cavalry
