Medal of Honor recipients and Leavenworth County

         Leavenworth County has the distinction of having the second greatest concentration of Medal of Honor recipients in the country after Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.  Two recipients of the Medal of Honor currently live in the city of Leavenworth-- Colonel (retired) Roger Donlon (Vietnam) and Charles Hagemeister, (Vietnam) making Leavenworth the only city that two recipients call home.

        There are a total of 19 recipients buried in three cemeteries in Leavenworth County.

Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery: nine interred and one memorialized

Captain Harry Bell, (Philippine Insurrection)  36th Infantry, U.S. Volunteers

2LT Thomas Custer, (Civil War) Company B, 6th Michigan Cavalry.  Custer received two MOHs, one of only 19 double recipients.

Lieutenant (j.g.) William Edward Hall, (World War II) Scouting Squadron 2, Air Group 2, USS Lexington

Corporal John Kyle, (Indian Wars) Company M, 5th US Cavalry

Private Fitz Lee, (War with Spain) Troop M, 10th US Cavalry

Private Edward Pengally, (Indian Wars) Company B, 8th US Cavalry

First Sergeant Joseph Robinson, (Indian Wars) Company D, 3rd US Cavalry

Private Albert Sale, (Indian Wars) Company F, 8th US Cavalry

First Sergeant Jacob Widmer, Company D, 5th US Cavalry

Corporal George Miller, Company H, 5th US Cavalry is memorialized in the Memorial Plot.

 

Mount Calvary Cemetery: three interred

Sergeant Robert McPhelan, (Indian Wars) Company E, 5th US Infantry

Private Thomas Kelly, (Indian Wars) Company I, 5th US Infantry

Corporal Patrick Leonard, (Indian Wars) Company C, 2nd US Cavalry

 

Leavenworth National Cemetery: six interred

Private William W. Burritt, (Civil War), U.S. Army, Company G, 113th Illinois Infantry

First Lieutenant (then Corporal) Daniel A. Dorsey (Civil War) U.S. Army, Company H, 33rd Ohio Infantry

Sergeant John S. Durham, (Civil War) U.S. Army, Company F, 1st Wisconsin Infantry

Sergeant William Garrett, (Civil War) U.S. Navy, Company G, 41st Ohio Infantry.

Musician (then Private) John Gray (Civil War), U.S. Army, Company B, 5th Ohio Infantry

First Sergeant John H. Shingle, (Indian Campaigns) U.S. Army, Troop I, 3rd U.S. Cavalry
